The gy-521 is an inertial measurement unit (imu) module that uses the mpu-6050 chip from inventense. The mpu-6050 itself is a chip with 3-axis accelerometer (accelerator sensor) and 3-axis gyroscope (balance controller), or in other words 6 degrees of freedom (dof) imu. In addition, the mpu-6050 already has digital motion processors (dmp), which will process raw data from each sensor. The data will be processed into data in the form of quaternions (4 dimensions). Mpu6050 also minimizes the resulting error.
Gy-521 communicates microcontroller via the i2c bus (inter integrated circuit). This allows the module to become a slave, which only sends the required data. Or become a master, such as ordering additional modules to support the gy-521 process itself.
The gy-521 is also equipped with fifo buffer and built-in interrupt signal. The data from the sensor can be placed on the fifo buffer before it is sent, then the interrupt signal will inform the microcontroller once the data is read.
